Hubble, Bubble...

Toil and trouble.
Something's a-brewing in my head. And it's not Sparks. No, my brain has decided that it wants to focus on an new story idea. Well, when I say new, I mean I got the idea some time last year, wrote it down and then thought no more of it. Until now. I found myself pondering it the other night and suddenly I had a breakthrough on the main complication.
The story is set in a fictional, steam-punk styled world. There is a magic within this world, called life-magic. People normally just call it magic. This is the energy, along with normal energy, that resides within every living thing. Within this world, there is a curse. An affliction of sorts. I have yet to figure out how it originated. Anyway. People who are affected by this disease rapidly lose their life-magic. They have to continually top up from other life sources, reducing that source's magic and transferring the disease in the process. So think vampires, but life instead of blood, and no sparkles.
There are going to be two main characters in the story, and a really sick, twisted bad guy. A friend of mine gave me a brilliant idea for the twisted part. See, when one of these afflicted beings touches another being to absorb its magic, they also absorb some of its characteristics. There are many implications because of this, and I won't go telling them all now. That's something people will have to find out when I get this published lol.

Writing Again!

Hello to whoever is out there! I don't know if there are many of you who read this, but if you do, you get a hug and  cookie

So, I'm back at university, classes have started and I'm catching up with all of my friends, including my boyfriend. It feels like so long since I've seen them all.
Anyway, the stimulation of classes seems to have given me back some of my motivation. I had written a more detailed plan sometime on the holidays - the only thing it seems I did on Sparks II - and this has helped greatly in allowing me to add several thousand words to it today. Granted, some of that was copy-pasta from the spare parts I keep in another document, but I still feel that I have acheived a lot.

In other news - I got my Ps! That is my provisional license. I can now drive without a supervisor in the car. Not that I really want or need to at the moment. I kind of only got the thing out of nessecity. My Learner's license was going to expire in August and I wouldn't really have had time to get a lot of practice in before that what with being at uni and everything.

That's all for now. I might go and write some more, or I might just end up watching a movie.

Blogging is so Weird...

Isn't it though? Up until the creation of blogs and the Internet, people had no desire to share their diaries with the world, but with the invention of cyberspace, the keyboard, Twitter, Facebook and the blog-o-sphere, suddenly everyone wanted to share absolutely everything. There are millions of blogs, profiles and twitterers all sending their personal doings, thoughts and ruminations out into the world. My question is why? Why did people suddenly have this urge to go public? Is it because they just couldn't before? It is because they're just following the crowd in which everyone is already doing it? Is it because they see the attention media stars get, and want some of that? Is it a combination of all of these things? Although, I can't really talk, because this is a blog post lol. All I can answer those questions with is that this blog is mainly about my writing career, and where my fan base will centre (If I ever happen to get one). So someone tell me what this sudden urge to be heard is all about.

There be my daily rant. I suddenly realised I needed to be deep and intellectual for a bit, after having to pause before my brain could remember how to spell 'write' and 'remember'. I could feel my smarts leaking out my ears after such a long time of being unused... Not a good thing to have happen lol.
In other news, it is 2012! My brain is still asking "Where did 2011 go?", to which I must simply shrug my shoulders in astonishment. It went by so quickly. I still can not believe I am now a second year university student. Only this year and next year remain, until I turn twenty and enter the real world. As an adult. *Recoils slightly in horror.* I may be eighteen, but in my head, I still feel like a sixteen-year old. Is that a bad thing?

Writing news! I received an email, maybe two weeks ago, from the Drummond Literary Agency. They told they did not like Sparks. I was disappointed, but I knew it was bound to happen. It was a Buckley's-like chance that I would be accepted by the first agency I submitted a manuscript to.

Christmas was a wonderful time for me. I got a laptop cooling pad, delicious gourmet ice-cream and two packets of fabric ink pens to scribble on t-shirts with. I must work on some designs now... The trouble is, they will only really work on white shirts, whereas the really good designs I've seen have been on coloured shirts, or black ones. Ah well. I gotta work with what I've got, I suppose.
I got sick about two weeks before Christmas, pretty much the day after I had started a painting that I was going to give to my mother. It was a nasty bug, which left me unable to finish the painting until Christmas eve. I got it done though, and it turned out wonderfully. I must say that it is the best painting I have ever done. Not to mention the biggest. Here is a link to it, if you wish to take a peek. While you're at it, have a squiz at the rest of my work on deviantART. I like to dabble in a bit of everything, so there's photography, painting, digital art and other bits and pieces on there.

While I'm on here, I may as well post the little bit of writing I have done over the holidays. One of my favourite authors, Derek Landy, who can be found over on Derek Landy Blogs Under Duress, held a character creation competition. The best characters would be included in one of his new short stories. I wrote a small piece to introduce the character I thought up.

The man was tea-kettle shaped, to say the least. Squat and round with a thatch of oily black hair that seemed beaten back by shiny bald patches. He was middle aged and seemed inconspicuous enough in his stained blue jeans, singlet and leather coat. It was the way he ate that was making Andrew stare. There were a few meat pies on the bench beside him, and a pile of empty wrappers littering the grass. He would take a pie out of its plastic, heft it to his tiny mouth, and then it would vanish. Andrew could not fathom how the man achieved this feat. He glanced down at Diesel who had finally finished doing his business on the dark, wet grass of the park.
“Are we going now?” he asked the dog. Diesel looked up and wagged his tail.
“Come on then,” said Andrew, giving the lead a tug. He took a few steps along the path and glanced back up at the man. He had another pie in his hands, but he was now gazing at Andrew, who stopped abruptly. The man gave a small smile.
“G’day,” he said. Andrew frowned. The stranger’s smile lengthened.
“Get a lot of those looks when I open me mouth,” he said with a thick drawl. Andrew noticed that he barely opened his mouth to speak.
“Are you Australian?” he asked, then regretted it, feeling a bit rude. The stranger seemed as though he was trying not to smile now.
“Yep. Fair dinkum Aussie,” he replied. Andrew smiled uncertainly, not sure how to reply. The man sighed, looking back at his pie.
“Ah. You don’t get many of these around here. You can get ‘em in wheelbarrows where I come from, so when I found these, I took the whole lot. Nothing like a good taste of home to settle your belly. They need a bit of sauce though. You ain’t got any dead horse on ya’ mate?”
Andrew stared at him open mouthed. The man slapped his thigh and tried not to laugh.
“Dead horse. Slang for red sauce. Y’know, tomato sauce? Ket-chup if you’re a yank.”
Andrew finally got the message and smiled shakily. “Sorry. I have no sauce,” he said. “But I think you can get it in little sachets from the cafe up the street.”
“Oh really? That’s nifty. Thanks mate. Oh, where’re me manners? The name’s Ball. Marrow Ball.”
“Andrew. I’m Andrew Dayton,” he replied, mulling over what an odd name the stranger possessed.
“Nice to meet ya’ Andrew. Now you best get on your way, I think your mutt’s getting a bit uppity,” said Marrow. Andrew, ever the comedian as his wife described him, tried to make a joke of the situation.
“Maybe he likes you Mr. Ball. He certainly loves chasing them around the yard at home.”
Marrow slapped his knees again and began laughing fit to burst. Andrew smiled weakly. It hadn’t been that good a joke. His smile withered even more as Marrow sat back up, grinning widely now.
“Oh dear,” he said, looking at Andrew’s pale face. “I seem to have opened me mouth again. I always do get the strangest of looks when I do that.” He smiled even wider, revealing rows upon rows of sharp, serrated shark teeth. Marrow opened his great maw and swallowed his last pie. Andrew began backing slowly away. Diesel was whimpering now. Marrow was watching them with dark, gleaming eyes.
“Sorry fellas. Can’t let you go blabbing my little secret now,” he said, teeth clicking.
Andrew didn’t care what the little shark man said, he was getting out of there. He turned and ran. Marrow growled and leapt after them. Andrew heard a ripping, roaring sound behind him as he ran, Diesel skittering along beside him. He glanced back to see what he could only describe as a whirling tornado of teeth, bearing down on him.

The police chief stepped under the security tape, brushing the rain off his jacket.
“Another one?” he asked the detective, who was already there, looking bleary eyed and holding a steaming cup of coffee.
“Yes.” He said simply, stepping around the police vehicles that blocked the view from the public. The chief followed and recoiled at the sight.
“A body. Well, two bodies, but only one human, completely stripped of flesh, surrounded by what we can only describe as localised tornado damage.”
Andrew’s remains were lying on the ground and had been picked almost clean, while most of Diesel’s skeleton hung from it’s leash which had been caught around a tree branch. The sight was grisly.
“What the hell are we dealing with detective?” asked the chief, glancing up just in time to see a dark-haired girl and a tall man in an overcoat, hat and glasses slide into a huge black car.

Comment if you think he's any good.

I Hope It's Not Writer's Block...

Yellow all!

So, it's been about a month since my last post. Quite a few interesting things happened and also didn't happen. I got a boyfriend. That I did not expect. I finished my first year of university. Kinda expected that one, but it's still a totally weird feeling. Just thinking that I only have two more years of formal education freaks me the hell out. I have also done no writing whatsoever. I think I read over the summary for Sparks II once, and that's about it. Feeling so lazy. Well, not really lazy. I just don't want to do anything except play Magic the Gathering, a game my boyfriend got for me, talk to said boyfriend online and sleep in. And I seem to be eating pizza. A lot. *Raises eyebrow*

I haven't heard back from the agency I submitted Sparks to... whenever it was. I should really start keeping a track of stuff like that. But I think I've gone past the 'If you haven't heard back from us at this time, then we don't like you' date. So I suppose I should do up another cover letter and send it to someone else. Actually, I might do an editing session first. Said boyfriend spotted a mistake on about page ten. *Worried face*

What else have I been doing? *Finger on chin*
We had a garage sale. I managed to sell my PS2 and all the bits and pieces that went with it. Earnt some pocket money. Tried to learn the Party Rock Anthem shuffle today, but failed miserably. Watched Cars 2. Which was surprisingly good for the sequel of a children's movie. Normally I hate sequels, but this was quite okay. Aaaaand... That's about it. Exciting huh?

Cya-n.

(See what I did there?)

Fangirl Rant

Well, here goes my first real blog entry. Part of which is already on deviantART, but, meh. I have study to do, so I'm going to cheat a little and copy-paste. You won't tell anyone, will you?

Anyway.

I am currently most of the way through my second semester of my university degree. My first year is nearly over. It seems only yesterday I had just arrived on college, a brand new fresher. Exams are coming up, I had assignments due, and all I could seem to do was listen to Doctor Who audiobooks!
I didn't actually know they existed until about a couple of weeks ago, when I was craving more Doctor Who and decided to Google them. Turns out there are about four audibooks that are actually read by David Tennant and three by Matt Smith. This led me to curling up in my deskchair for hours, headphones in, clutching a pillow and my doctor doll, wearing my fez, and listening to that gorgeous Scottish accent. (I haven't got to Smith's books yet.) I must say that he does them books just as well as he acts. The transitions between his narration and doing the Doctor's voice is seamless, and you can hear every wink and grin. *Stares off dreamily into mid-distance*

I was also bouncing up and down in my seat, eagerly awaiting 7:30 a few Saturdays ago. Most of my friends downloaded the Doctor Who finale and watched it early, but I decided to wait. It was fantastic. Not as good as some episodes I've seen, but still fantastic. I won't go into detail about it, as it would be spoilers for those who haven't seen it, but as the episode is titled The Wedding of River Song I feel I am at least allowed to gush about how much I fangirl 'awwwww'ed and 'squee!'ed when River tied the knot. It was a lot. My poor Doctor doll nearly got the stuffing squished out of him in my excitement lol.

On other notes, but still Doctor Who related, I thoroughly enjoyed the Cosplay event that was put on at the university Anime Club I attend. It was great fun and I got a lot of comments on my costume, [link] . It was fun to make, fun to wear, fun to pose for photos in and incredibly fun to go and collect my 2nd place prize in. The prize turned out to be a 1:24 scale diecast model Delorean time machine from Back to the Fututre, another series that I absolutely adore. So there was then the question of what happened when a time machine was given a time machine...

Now what other stuff was I going to write about? Oh, yes. Writing.
My novel! It is finally finished! The main reason I wanted to start this blog so as to follow the beginning of what I hope to be a successful writing career. The first edition of my novel was completed when I was in grade nine at high school, I think. Since then it has had many, MANY rewrites and edits and periods of hating it, then loving it and then realising it was naive trash. But finally, I have produced a manuscript that I feel happy with. Now all I have to do is find an agent. Such a task is going to take a long time, with many, MANY rejections.
This is the synopsis bit I have written for my query letter, but cut an pasted here for a quick overview of the storyline:
My novel, Sparks, is Young Adult Fiction. It spans a period of three months and is set in Sydney, Australia, in the present year. The protagonist is Sarah 'Sparks' Harrier, a lonely sixteen-year-old girl who is abducted by puma/men hybrids and transported to an eerie, white-walled facility, where she awakens to find that she has been given extraordinary powers. The novel tells the story of Sparks' subsequent escape and her struggle to deal with her strange and dangerous powers as they begin to take over her life and affect her friendships. During her fight to understand why they have been forced upon her, she learns a devastating secret. This novel is approximately 86,000 words long.
If anyone knows of any good agents, whether it be here in Australia, or elswhere, contact me with their info please?

That's all from me for now, I thinks. I might go and listen to more Doctor Who. Or, y'know, do some study.
Tata.

And So I'm Back, From Outer Space...

I'm going to cheat a bit here. I realised after reading a few blogs that some started with a bit of an introduction to themselves and what they are actually doing in this vast, messy world some call the 'blogosphere'. So, I'm going to change the date on this entry to make it appear as the first of this blog. I'll set it to Halloween, just for fun.

Okay, that done, time to introduce myself.
I'm Raechel.

I am a young student, currently studying a Bachelor of New Media Arts at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia. I love art and writing and I am hoping to get my novel, Sparks, off the ground sometime soon. It is my opinion that I spend way too much time on the computer. I like to read full sized novels in one sitting and I can spend whole days playing the Sims 2 and Minecraft. I love science fiction shows, namely Fringe and Doctor Who. I am not ashamed to say that I am a die hard Whovian fangirl. My greatest acheivement to date in this respect, is that my college dorm door is decorated to look like the TARDIS.

People tell me I'm slightly mad. I accept these compliments with bows. It is my opinion that normal people are rather dull. When you try to conform, you lose who you really are, or who you really can be. So, I be myself. Granted, it's very easy to be myself. I am lucky in many, many ways. I have a loving, generous family, a sharp mind, a good waistline and if I might says so, fair looks. I am at the beginning of my life really. I have not yet had any major emotional crises, achievements or failures. So, expect this blog to get interesting as I write about my life and these potential successes and disasters. And my writing. Don't forget the writing.
I must say I love writing. I get a thrill when writing. I get to play with characters that I've pulled from nothing. I get to send them on adventures, succeed, fail, hurt, love. I would liken it to being like a god, but that's a bit egotistical. I think it's more like a link back to my childhood, where I'd set up my Barbie doll house so perfectly, then give my Barbies life. And then I'd steal my brother's Action Man, have Barbie invite him over for a plastic meal, a drive in the Barbie (R) Convertible, then take him up the dollhouse stairs, for some, uh... coffee. Yes. Coffee. *giggle*
Anyway. Giving characters stories is fun, yes. But I also like to think about how people will read my stories. I want to take them on adventures too. I want to see their eyes light up as they read the plots I first dragged kicking and grumbling onto the page, then spent hours polishing, cleaning and re-reading. I want people to enjoy my writing and get lost in the stories like I do.

So, hopefully, that's what this blog will acheive. It will tell a journey of my life and my writing.

Enjoy.
